A graduate of the Adler Fellowship program of the San Francisco Opera, the young Korean soprano Ji Young Yang is a gifted singer possessing a voice of sheer beauty and described as “silvery,” “fluent,” and “graceful.” Her recent European debut in a performance and recording of the Soprano Solo in Mahler’s 4th Symphony with the BBC Scottish Symphony in Glasgow and Perth garned high praise with Garry Frasier of the Courier characterizing her interpretation as “sensational.” He added: “There was vigour and there was passion but in the main there was ethereal beauty, all wrapped up in a performance of stunning quality” Her recent reprise of of Carmina Burana with the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra at UC Davis Hall also garnered excellent acclaim.
Since making her San Francisco Opera debut in 2007, Ms. Yang has sung with distinguished opera companies and orchestras in the US and has demonstrated exceptional artistic expressiveness on the concert, recital and operatic stages. Opera companies and orchestras with whom Ms. Yang has performed in addition to San Francisco Opera include Boston Lyric Opera, the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Sacramento Choral Socity and Orchestra, Gold Coast Ensemble, and Earplay. Ms. Yang recently returned from Adelaide at Elder Hall and the Port Fairy Spring Festival in Victoria where she performed in recital with the acclaimed Australian pianist, Kate Stevens.
Roles Ms. Yang performed with San Francisco Opera include Giannetta (L’Elisir d’Amore), Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore for Families), Xenia (Boris Godunov), Juliette (Die tote Stadt,) the Young Shepherd (Tannhäuser), Pamina (The Magic Flute for Families), Julia Agnes Lee (Appomattox), A Singer (La Rondine), and The Rose (The Little Prince). As a Merola Opera Program participant, she performed Ilia (Idomeneo) and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier). Other performances include Giannetta (L’Elisir d’Amore) for Boston Lyric Opera, Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw) at Lincoln Theater in Yountville and as Frasquita (Carmen) at the Mondavi Center at U.C. Davis. Additional assignments as an Adler Fellow included covers of Dalinda (Ariodante), Woglinde (Das Rheingold), Lisette (La Rondine), and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). Ms. Yang performed Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Despina (Così fan tutte), Beth (Little Women),Héro (Béatrice et Bénédict) for the New England Conservatory Opera Theater while earning a graduate diploma at the conservatory.
In concert and on the recital stage, Ms. Yang has sung the Soprano Solo in Mendelsohn’s St. Paul, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, Brahm’s German Requiem, Mozart’s Exsultate, Jubilate, and Schubert’s Der Hirt ouf dem Felson. She has performed the songs of Richard Strauss, Edvard Grieg, Hugo Wolf, Johannes Brahms, Poulenc, Albert Roussel, Rameau, Jaoquin Turina, Britten, Butler, Purcell and others.
Ms. Yang has enjoyed recognition for her musical talents and is the recipient of various awards and scholarships. She was a New England regional finalist in the 2006 Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, a Concorso Lirico Internationale Iris Adami Corradetti Semifinalist, she received the Fank and Carmela Pandolfi Award in the same year, and was a Mid-South Regional award in the 2009 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Additional acknowledgements include the President’s Scholarship – a full scholarship award and the Wendy Shattuck Award from the New England Conservatory and Merit and Gift Awards from the Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Yang is a resident of Los Angeles, CA.

소프라노 양지영은 미국 3 대 오페라단 중의 하나인 샌프란시스코 오페라단 (San Francisco Opera)이 주최하는 아들러 펠로우쉽 (Adler Fellowship)에 한국인 소프라노 최초로 최종 우승자로 선발되어 “마음을 움직이는 탁월함 그리고 음악적인 이해력과 특출한 감정의 전달력이 어울어진 노래.” 라는 찬사를 받으며 바그너 오페라 ‘탄호이저’의 목동역으로 데뷔하였다. 이후 오페라 ‘사랑의 묘약’의 아디나 와 잔넷타, ‘마술피리’의 파미나, ‘장미의 기사’의 소피, ‘보리스 고두노프’의 제니아, ‘세밀레’의 세밀레, ‘티토왕의 자비’의 세르빌리아 등 다수의 오페라를 세계적인 지휘자 Bruno Campanella, Julius Rudel, Donald Runnicles, Patrick Summers, Ion Marin, Stephen Lord ,Vassilly Sinaisky 등과 함께 연주하였다.
최근 그녀는 Deutsch Oper Berlin, BBC Scottish Symphony의 상임지휘자인 Donald Runnicles 의 초청으로 영국 BBC Scottish Symphony와 Mahler 교향곡 4 번을 협연하여 “그녀의 가사 해석은 센세이셔날했다. 그녀의 노래에는 생동감이 넘쳤고 또 열정적이였다. 그러나 무엇보다도 그녀의 노래에는 천상의 아름다움이 있었다. 이 모든 것들이 굉장히 수준높은 아름다운 연주를 만들어냈다.”라는 극찬을 받으며 유럽 무대에 성공적으로 데뷔하였다. 또한 다양한 스펙트럼을 가진 양지영은 호주의 Recitals Australia 와 Port Fairy Spring Music Festival의 초청으로 피아니스트 Kate Stevens 과 함께 순회 공연을 마쳤으며, 독창적이고 새로운 시도로 LA Times 의 극찬을 받은 The Industry LA 와 함께 세계초연 멀티미디어 오페라 “Crescent City”를 연주하였다.
양지영은 예원학교, 서울 예술 고등학교에서 박미혜 교수님을 사사하며 실기 수석으로 졸업하였고 서울대 음대 성악과에 진학하여 유태열 교수님과 서혜연 교수님을 사사하였다. 서울대 음대 재학 중 도미하여 미국 뉴욕 맨하튼 음대 (Manhattan School of Music)에 편입, 학부 및 석사과정을 최우수 장학생으로 졸업하였다. 이후 보스턴 뉴잉글랜드 컨서버토리 (New England Conservatory) 에서 총장 전액 장학생으로 전문연주자 과정을 마치고, 세계적인 성악가 Anna Netrebko, Rollando Villaźon 등이 거쳐간 샌프란스코 오페라단 (San Francisco Opera)의 메롤라 오페라 프로그램 (Merola Opera Program)에 합격하였다.
이후 샌프란시스코 오페라단 (San Francisco Opera)에서 활동하였으며, 보스톤 리릭 오페라단 (Boston Lyric Opera), 로스앤젤레스 필하모닉 (Los Angeles Philharmonic), 샌프란시스코 심포니 코러스 (San Francisco Symphony and Chorus), 새크라멘토 코럴 소사이어티 오케스트라(Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra), UC Davis Orchestra, Gold Coast Ensemble, Earplay 등과 공연하였다. 2012년 10월에는 대한민국 국제음악제에 초청되어 한국 무대에 데뷔하였고 11월에는 KBS 클래식 오딧세이 출연, 12월에는 삼성 디스플레이 주관 송년 음악회에 지휘자 함신익 선생님과 연주하였다. 2013년 1월에는 KBS 교향악단과의 신년 음악회 협연 등 국내 무대에서도 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있다.
